Abaqus Co-Simulation: Thermal Coupling
This tutorial demonstrates how to run a thermal co-simulation case using Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and Abaqus. Co-simulation involves a strong coupling between the two codes, in which data exchange occurs at frequent intervals, that are known as coupling steps. In this case, data is exchanged at the end of each time-step, and a relatively large time-step is used to approximate a steady-state solution.
Preparing the Abaqus Model
In this section, you prepare the model for the exhaust manifold in Abaqus/CAE, including the corresponding Abaqus input file (*.inp).

        An assembly contains all the geometry that forms the final finite element model. In this case, the assembly contains only the manifold geometry, which is added to the assembly by creating an instance of the part.
      - Defining Surfaces and Sets
        Specify the FSI interface as the inner wetted surface of the manifold model, and define two additional surfaces to specify thermal conditions on the manifold exterior and the flanges.

        Define the heat transfer analysis step.

      - Defining Boundary Conditions
        In the heat transfer analysis step, the convection conditions and fixed temperature at the inlet become active. Specify the convection properties as interactions, since the manifold transfers heat to the surroundings. Specify the temperature condition at the inlet as a boundary condition.

        The next step involves defining and generating a mesh for the manifold part and is carried out within the Mesh module in Abaqus.

Data is exchanged at frequent intervals that are called coupling steps. This level of communication between the solvers allows you to obtain a full solution across the fluid-solid interface.

    Simcenter STAR-CCM+ allows for one-way coupling with gPROMS, a process modeling platform for the simulation of complex systems. In Simcenter STAR-CCM+ you reduce three-dimensional solution data to discrete values defined for clusters of cells; data from these clusters can then be exported to a network in gPROMS.

Defining Initial Conditions

Define the manifold initial temperature.

To specify the initial temperature through the manifold using a predefined field:

Double-click the Predefined Fields container in the Model Tree.

In the Create Predefined Field dialog, set the following properties:

Click Continue...

This predefined field must now be applied to a region of the model, and in this case apply it to the whole model via the ALL geometry set:

Click Sets to the bottom right of the viewport.
In the Region Selection dialog, select ALL and click Continue...
In the Edit Predefined Field dialog, set Magnitude to 500 and click OK.
