Abaqus Co-Simulation: Thermal Coupling
This tutorial demonstrates how to run a thermal co-simulation case using Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and Abaqus. Co-simulation involves a strong coupling between the two codes, in which data exchange occurs at frequent intervals, that are known as coupling steps. In this case, data is exchanged at the end of each time-step, and a relatively large time-step is used to approximate a steady-state solution.
Preparing the Abaqus Model
In this section, you prepare the model for the exhaust manifold in Abaqus/CAE, including the corresponding Abaqus input file (*.inp).
Defining and Assigning Section Properties
Create a section from the material and assign it to the manifold part.

        Specify the FSI interface as the inner wetted surface of the manifold model, and define two additional surfaces to specify thermal conditions on the manifold exterior and the flanges.

        The next step involves defining and generating a mesh for the manifold part and is carried out within the Mesh module in Abaqus.

Defining and Assigning Section Properties

Create a section from the material and assign it to the manifold part.

To create a section definition:

In the Model Tree, double-click the Sections container.
In the Create Section dialog, change the name of the section to ManifoldSection.
Make sure that the category and type are set to Solid and Homogeneous, and click Continue...
In the Edit Section dialog, make sure that the Material is set to GRAY CAST IRON and click OK.
In the Model Tree, expand the manifold item underneath the Parts container and double-click Section Assignments in the list of part attributes.
To assign the section to the part, select the part in the viewport and click Done in the prompt area.
In the Edit Section Assignment dialog that appears, make sure that Section is set to ManifoldSection and click OK.
