3D-CAD Advanced Preparation: Repairing An Exhaust
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides a suite of tools in 3D-CAD that you can use to prepare and repair imported CAD geometry so that it becomes suitable for simulation. CAD geometries that are suitable for manufacturing are not necessarily ready for simulation due to the tolerances that a manufacturing process can accept.
Importing the Geometry
For this tutorial, you are required to import an exhaust CAD model. You import the geometry directly into the 3D-CAD modeler.

  - 3D-CAD: Cyclone Separator
    Cyclone separators provide a low-cost solution for removing particulate matter from gas or liquid flows. In Simcenter STAR-CCM+, the 3D-CAD geometry modeler provides all the tools necessary for creating this type of geometry directly.

    In some modeling scenarios the level of detail in an imported CAD file is higher than necessary for the simulation. To simplify geometry in these cases, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides geometry repair and defeaturing tools within 3D-CAD, along with a shape-based search function.

    - Importing the Geometry
      For this tutorial, you are required to import an exhaust CAD model. You import the geometry directly into the 3D-CAD modeler.
    - Repairing the Resonator and Transforming the Exhaust Tip
      After you import the exhaust geometry, you use the tools in 3D-CAD to convert the Resonator part to a solid body. Then, you create two coordinate systems and use a transform operation to move the exhaust tip to its original position.
    - Repairing the Exhaust Tip
      One of the exhaust tips is a sheet body with internal parts. Some of the surfaces are missing from this part which prevents 3D-CAD from using it as a solid body. In order to use this body in meshing, you must reconstruct the internal parts before converting it to a solid body.
    - Extracting the Internal Volume
      Before extracting the internal volume, use the Dynamic Sectioning tool to visually inspect the parts for gaps. Once you have identified the gaps in the geometry, use the extend solid tool to close them.

Importing the Geometry

For this tutorial, you are required to import an exhaust CAD model. You import the geometry directly into the 3D-CAD modeler.

To import the exhaust geometry in 3D-CAD:

Create a new Simcenter STAR-CCM+ simulation.
Select File > Import > Import CAD Model into 3D-CAD....
In the Open dialog, navigate to the geometry folder of the downloaded tutorials bundle.
See Downloading the Tutorials Files from the Support Center Portal.
Select exhaust_model.x_b, then click Open.
Rename the 3D-CAD Model 1 node to Exhaust.
Save the simulation as 3D-CAD_AdvancedPreparation.sim.
