Flamelet Generated Manifold: Perfectly Premixed Combustion with Adaptive Meshing
This tutorial simulates lean perfectly-premixed propane combustion using the Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) model in a combustor where the flame is stabilized behind a V-shaped bluff body. The Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model is used to directly resolve the large scales of the turbulence, and model the small scale motions, in the flow domain.
Setting Up Post-Processing
You set up scalar scenes for temperature, propane mass fraction, progress variable, and the error indicator and refinement level for the adaptive mesh refinement.

    - Prerequisites
      The instructions in the Flamelet Generated Manifold: Premixed Propane tutorial assume that you are already familiar with certain techniques in Simcenter STAR-CCM+.
    - Loading the Starting File and Generating the Mesh
      To set up the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ simulation, launch a simulation and generate the volume mesh.
    - Selecting the Physics Models
      The Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) model assumes that the thermo-chemical states (temperature and species mass fractions) in a turbulent flame are similar to that in a laminar flame, and that these states can be parameterized by a small set of scalars, namely mixture fraction, reaction progress variable, and enthalpy. There are several models for the reaction progress source term, but in this Large Eddy Simulation (LES) the FGM Kinetic Rate model is used where the chemical rate is interpolated from the FGM table.
    - Setting Up Mesh Adaption for the Reacting Flow
      The Adaptive Mesh model uses reacting flow-specific mesh refinement criteria to determine where to refine or coarsen the mesh along the flame front and within the region of the flame.
    - Setting Initial Conditions
      The flame is ignited by initializing to a burnt composition. Since the fuel stream is defined later as a premixed mixture, the mixture fraction is specified as 1.0.
    - Generating the FGM Table
      You import the chemistry definition using Chemkin files, and build the FGM table in Simcenter STAR-CCM+.
    - Setting the Inflow Boundary Conditions
      All wall boundaries are adiabatic, no-slip walls with zero-flux for the scalars. Since these conditions are the defaults, no changes are required here. However, the inlet boundary conditions must be set.
    - Enhancing Convergence
      The default under-relaxation factors for the flow and turbulence equations are suitable. However, to aid convergence, you adjust the under-relaxation factors for the PISO Unsteady, Segregated Flow, and FGM Combustion models.

Setting Up Post-Processing

You set up scalar scenes for temperature, propane mass fraction, progress variable, and the error indicator and refinement level for the adaptive mesh refinement.

To set up post-processing:

Expand the Scenes node and specify the properties of the scalar scenes as follows:


Scene	Action
AMR Error Indicator	Select the Scalar 1 > Scalar Field node and set Function to Error Indicator > Error Indicator of Progress Variable.
AMR Refinement Level	Select the Scalar 1 node and activate Display Mesh. Select the Scalar 1 > Scalar Field node and set Function to Refinement Level.
Mass Fraction of Propane	`Select the Scalar 1 > Scalar Field node and set Function to Mass Fraction > Mass Fraction of C3H8.
Progress Variable	Select the Scalar 1 > Scalar Field node and set Function to Progress Variable.
Temperature	Select the Scalar 1 > Scalar Field node and set Function to Temperature.

To open the scenes, multi-select each of the [scene] nodes, right-click one of the selected nodes and select Open.

When species are set as Species For Tabulation within the FGM table parameters, you can create plots or scalar scenes to monitor these species. Monitoring CO in the fluid domain allows you to track the amount of CO emissions that are created and expelled from the domain.

Save the simulation.
