Removing the Tire Treads

Using the search tool, 3D-CAD allows you to find geometrically similar bodies based on sample inputs.

The original model includes geometry for each tread on the tires. Assuming that these do not unduly affect the flow, you can use the 3D-CAD search tool to automatically select all the tread protrusions. After selecting the protrusions you can remove them using the defeaturing tool.

  1. To create a design filter that finds all the tread extrusions on the tires:
    1. Right-click the Design Filters node in the 3D-CAD simulation tree and select New.
      The Filter panel appears.

    2. Keeping Selection Mode as Entire CAD model, next to Input Type select (Faces).
    3. Under the Search Criteria tab, select the Find Similar option.
    4. In the 3D-CAD view scene, select the top face and all side faces of three outside treads, as shown below. After selection, the total number of faces is 17. All other treads are repetitions of these three.

    5. Once you have selected the faces, click Search to locate all the similar bodies in the geometry.
All the treads on the six tires are identified and selected in the geometry. In total 20,400 faces are found by the search tool.

    6. At the bottom of the Filter panel, click OK.
This action creates Design Filter 1 under the Design Filters node in the simulation tree.
    7. Rename the Design Filter 1 node to Tire Treads.
  2. To defeature the tire treads using the filter:
    1. Select the European Truck > Design Filters > Tire Treads node.
    2. Hold the <CTRL> key, right-click in the 3D-CAD view scene, and select Repair Tools > Defeature Faces.
The Defeature panel appears showing a preview of the selected tire treads.

    3. Click OK in the Defeature panel.
The following screenshot shows the European truck geometry without any tire treads after executing the operation.
