Simcenter STAR-CCM+ In-cylinder
The tutorials in this set illustrate features for simulating internal combustion engines in Simcenter STAR-CCM+ using the dedicated add-on Simcenter STAR-CCM+ In-cylinder.
Gasoline Engine: ECFM-3Z Combustion
In Simcenter STAR-CCM+ In-cylinder, you can simulate the combustion process in a gasoline engine using the Extended Coherent Flame Model Three Zone (ECFM-3Z).
Setting Up the Combustion Models
Here, you select the combustion and ignition models. To save runtime for this tutorial, you de-activate the liquid film model that was introduced in the Gasoline Engine: Charge Motion tutorial.

      Here, you select the combustion and ignition models. To save runtime for this tutorial, you de-activate the liquid film model that was introduced in the Gasoline Engine: Charge Motion tutorial.
    - Setting Up the Ignitor
      For the ignition of the air-fuel mixture, you create an ignitor Engine Part, which provides a template for defining the ignition location and timing. You set the ignition timing to 700.0 deg CA, which is 20.0 deg CA BTDC.
    - Setting Analysis Duration and Initial Gas Composition
      The simulation starts at 300 deg CA and runs until 800 deg CA. To set the initial gas composition in the cylinder and ports, you use Automatic Composition Initialization.
    - Reducing Under-Relaxation Factor and Time-Step Size
      To aid solution convergence, you reduce the under-relaxation factor for the pressure solver. For the automatic time-step control, you reduce the time-step size after fuel injection and decrease the time period in which the reduced time-step is used.
    - Setting the Re-Mesh Criteria
      During the running simulation, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ In-cylinder re-meshes the geometry based on certain re-mesh criteria to ensure good cell quality for all crank angles. The default re-mesh criteria are based on best practices and are suitable in most cases. Here, you set re-mesh criteria that are more suitable for this engine geometry.
    - Preparing the Plots and Scenes for Visualization
      To watch the solution develop, you open the plots for the temperature and for the pressure in the cylinder. Additionally, you create a scene that displays the reaction progress variable.
    - Running the Simulation
      The simulation is now set up and ready to run.

      After the simulation is complete, you visualize the results.

  - Diesel Engine: Closed-Cycle Sector Model
    A closed-cycle analysis investigates the injection, ignition, and combustion process in an engine cylinder with all intake and exhaust valves closed. For axisymmetric cylinder geometries, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ In-cylinder allows you to model these stages of the engine cycle in a sector of the actual cylinder geometry in order to reduce runtime.
  - Uniflow Two-Stroke Engine
    Two-stroke engines complete the power cycle with two strokes of the piston while turning the crankshaft once (360 degrees). With Simcenter STAR-CCM+ In-cylinder, you can simulate different types of two-stroke engines—uniflow, loop flow, or cross flow engines.

Setting Up the Combustion Models

Here, you select the combustion and ignition models. To save runtime for this tutorial, you de-activate the liquid film model that was introduced in the Gasoline Engine: Charge Motion tutorial.

To set up the physics models:

Edit the Models node and, in the Enabled Models group-box, de-select Liquid Film.

Select the following models, then click Close:
