Repairing CAD Geometry

The Repair CAD tool provides diagnostic checks for assessing the validity of bodies and attempts to repair them automatically. You can typically use this tool first in order to assess the extent and location of problems, and then use specific repair tools to resolve them.

The Repair CAD tool provides you with a user interface and a means to visualize the problem areas on the geometry. Even if this tool cannot repair a particular issue, the tool helps you to identify the problem areas on the geometry. For cases where the tool fails to repair a particular issue, you can use one of the 3D-CAD repair tools. For more information, see Working with Repair Tools.

To assess the number of repairs required:

  1. Launch the Repair CAD tool using one of the following options:
    • In the graphics window, right-click the selection and select Repair Tools > Repair CAD.
    • Select a body, body group, or CAD filter in the 3D-CAD simulation tree, then right-click and select Repair Tools > Repair CAD.
The Repair CAD panel appears on the left of the Graphic window.

  2. To run the diagnostics check, click Execute.

The tool analyzes the geometry for invalidities and displays the results in the Repair CAD panel.

Errors are classified into 8 color-coded categories. For more information, see Geometry Error Categories.

The affected areas are highlighted on the geometry in the color that is associated with the type of error.

Clicking an error type in the Repair CAD panel selects the CAD faces that correspond to that particular error.

After the repair, if the tool fails to repair any bodies, then it appears in the Invalid Bodies group box.

  3. Use the keys in the Geometry Diagnostics panel to cycle through the identified problem areas.

The Geometry Scene zooms into the problem area for each identified error. A short description of the error is provided at the bottom of the Geometry Diagnostics panel. Where appropriate, the location of the issue is displayed in the panel.

To reposition the view for the result, so that you don't have to zoom or pan the view yourself, activate Reset View.

  4. To repair the identified errors, first try running the (Auto-repair geometry errors) option, then rerun the diagnostic. If errors are still found, click the (Repair Bodies) option.
The Repair CAD tool may not fix all topological problems. Therefore, if these problem still exist in the geometry, they must be fixed afterwards using the Surface Repair tool.
  5. Click OK.
