Modeling Losses
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ allows you to model hysteresis and eddy current losses in electric machines.
The Modified Steinmetz model calculates the losses using a modified Steinmetz formula that is based on magnetic flux density calculations (see Eqn. (4344)). The loss terms can be used in thermal analyses.
To model hysteresis and eddy current losses:
- Set up the physics continua as described in Selecting the Physics Models and Materials.
-
In the relevant solid continua, add the following models:
Group box Model Optional Models Eddy Current Suppression Optional Models Modified Steinmetz These models are available for solid physics continua that use the Implicit Unsteady model. See Modified Steinmetz Model Reference. -
Specify the coefficients that appear in the modified Steinmetz formula using the corresponding properties under the solid material model.
You can add a
Modified Steinmetz monitor, that monitors the peak value and the average time derivative of a specified field function:
- Right-click the Monitors node and select .
-
Select the monitor and specify the
Field Function for which you wish to monitor the peak value and average time derivative. The default field function is the magnetic flux density.
The monitored quantities become available as field functions. See Modified Steinmetz Model Reference.
