Applying a Shear Load

Set up the segment to apply a constant load on the free end surface of the beam.

Saint-Venant's Principle allows you to model the point load as a constant load distributed across the free end surface.
  1. Rename the Regions > Beam > Segments > Surface Segment 1 node to Shear Load.
  2. Select the Segments > Shear Load node and set the properties as follows:
    Property Setting
Surfaces free side - lower flange
    free side - upper flange
    free side - web
    Type Load (default)
The load method is defined through the Solid Stress Loads physics condition for the segment. The default method is set to Force, which is appropriate to this case.

To specify a shear force of 800 N in the negative y direction:

  1. Select the Shear Load > Physics Values > Force node and set Value to [0.0, -800.0, 0.0] N.
The segment is now fully defined.

If you select the Shear Load segment node, the corresponding part surfaces are highlighted in the Graphics window.
