Applying Loads and Constraints Using Segments

Using Simcenter STAR-CCM+ segments, apply a shear load to the free end of the beam and constrain the end at the wall to prevent motion.

In the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ stress analysis framework, loads and constraints are applied directly on part surfaces or vertices using segments. A segment is a collection of part surfaces or vertices subject to a common condition, such as a load or constraint. In this tutorial, you set up a segment to define a shear load on the free end of the beam, and two segments to constrain the end at the wall.

Start by creating a segment:

Right-click the Regions > Beam node and select Create Segment > Surface Segment.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ adds a new node, Segments > Surface Segment 1, under the Beam region node.
All the segments that you create for a region are added within the Segments node for that region.

The segment Surfaces property allows you to specify a set of part surfaces. The Type property allows you to specify the type of condition (load or constraint) that is applied to the selected part surfaces.
