Running a Design Study
Design Manager provides various settings to control the run of a design study and the compute resources to use.
Before you run a design study, you must save your Design Manager project to a *.dmprj file. See Saving a Design Manager Project. You save the *.dmprj file to a directory that is called the project root directory. By default, Design Manager creates a subdirectory within the project root directory—the project artifact directory—to where it writes the study outputs. However, you can customize the location of the project artifact directory in the Design Manager project tree. See Design Manager Reference. Changing the location of the project artifact directory is particularly useful when you run low on disk space in the default location.
When you try to run a design study without having saved your Design Manager project to a *.dmprj file, a dialog opens asking you to save the project and to rerun the design study.
The following table displays the directory and the file structure within your project root directory:
Directories | Description | Naming Convention |
---|---|---|
Design_Exploration | Directory that contains the Design Manager project file (*.dmprj) and associated input files such as the reference simulation file (*.sim) and custom java macro files (*.java). | Project root directory |
|
Directory that is created at run time and contains the study artifact directories. This directory is named after the Design Manager project file. | Project artifact directory |
|
Directory for each design study. This directory is named after the study name in the Design Manager project and contains the design artifact directories. | Study artifact directory |
|
Directory for each design in the study, which contains the specified outputs, such as:
|
Design artifact directory |
|
Temporary folder that is created at run time and deleted after the run. To retain this folder, see Retain Temporary Artifacts. | Project execution directory |
Artifact Directory
You can access the artifact directory from the Design Details panel. To access the Design Details panel, right-click a design in the Output Table and select Show Design Details. In the Design Details panel, click the link in the Design Artifact entry to browse the design artifact folder.

After running a study with associated artifacts, clearing the study does not clear the artifacts. When this study runs again, new artifact directories are created. The original artifacts become unreferenced. To clear the unreferenced artifacts and free the disk, you right-click the [design manager project] node and select Clean Project Artifacts as follows:
