Re-running a Design Study or Selected Designs

After running a design study you can re-run the entire design study with modified settings or selected designs due to run failure.

Re-running the entire design study is usually required when the following generic settings of this design study are modified.

  • study type
  • input parameters
  • responses
  • scenes and plots for post-processing
  • run and resource settings

Re-running selected designs is particularly useful for few designs that failed during the study run due to the following reasons:

  • runtime
  • licensing failures

Design Manager uses the settings of the design study to re-run selected designs. Re-running a design updates the design results, such as responses, performance value, or feasability. Note, that re-running a baseline design can change the performance value of other designs in the design study.

In Pre-Allocation Mode, the license reservation for the selected designs is either based on the specified number of Simultaneous Jobs or on the number of selected designs:

  • If the number of selected designs is smaller than the number of simultaneous jobs, then the license reservation is based on the number of selected designs.
  • If the number of selected designs is higher than or equal to the number of simultaneous jobs, then the license reservation is based on the number of simultaneous jobs.

You can add and remove responses in the design study before you re-run selected designs. Adding and removing parameters is not supported.

Design Manager allows you to re-run designs using one of the following methods:

  • Re-running all designs of a design set
  • Re-running selected designs from an output table
  • Re-running selected designs from a plot

  1. To re-run the entire design study with modified settings:
    1. In the Design Manager project, right-click the respective design study node and select Clear Study.
The result data are removed from the Design Manager project.
    2. Clearing a design study does not remove the Design Manager output files from the disk.
      • If you want to remove the output files from the disk, navigate to the study artifact directory and delete it manually.
      • If you keep the previous output files, Design Manager uses subscripts for the new design artifact directories in your study artifact directory. See also: Artifact Directory.
    3. Modify the properties of the design study as required.
    4. Select File > Save and save the project file.
    5. Right-click the Design Studies > [design study] node and select Run Study
  2. To modify the response range and re-run the design study:
    1. Expand the Design Studies > [design study] > Responses > [response] node and select the Valid Minimum or Valid Maximum node and modify it value. You can set the values of both nodes if desired.
These nodes are only available if you activate the corresponding property on the [response] node (Specify Valid Minimum or Specify Valid Maximum).
    2. Right-click the Design Studies > [design study] node and select Run Study.
The failed designs due to the invalid range is then re-evaluated with the new range without actually re-running the simulations.
To repeat the failed designs collectively, you re-run the selected designs out of the design set Error.
  1. To run all designs of the design set Error:
    1. Right-click the Design Sets > [design set] node, such as Design Sets > Error, and select Rerun Designs.
For information on creating additional design sets, see Analyzing the Results of a Design Study.
Using <Ctrl>, you can select multiple design sets within a design study. Designs that are listed in several of the selected design sets are run only once.
  2. To re-run selected designs from an output table:
    1. Open the output table for a design set that contains the designs of interest. See Tabulating Designs.
    2. In the output table, select a row of a design that you want to re-run.
Using <Ctrl>, you can select multiple rows.
    3. Right-click and select Rerun Designs.
  3. To re-run selected designs from a plot:
    1. Open a plot that displays the designs of interest. See Creating XY Plots and Creating Parallel Coordinates Plots.
    2. Select the data point (XY plot) or data line (Parallel Coordinates plot) of a design that you want to re-run. Use <Ctrl> to select multiple designs.
    3. Right-click and select Rerun Designs.
  4. To stop or abort a design run, you must stop or abort the respective design study:
    1. Right-click the Design Studies > [design study] node and select Stop Study or Abort Study, respectively.
