Post-Processing DEM Data
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ allows you to analyze the flow of DEM phases over boundaries.
Since DEM phases are a form of Lagrangian phases, Lagrangian post-processing methods also apply to them. See Post-Processing Lagrangian Data.
Cylindrical Particles in Scalar Scenes
When creating scenes for simulations using cylindrical particles, set the Point Scale Mode to Particle Model. With this setting, the scene takes size information directly from the particle model.
propertyDirect Data on Boundaries
The following field functions are available on boundaries when the necessary physics or phase models are active:
- Abrasive Wear Rate
- Computes the estimated loss of mass material per second due to abrasion. This field function is available only if the Abrasive Erosion model is activated. See Modeling Erosion in the Discrete Element Method.
- Average DEM Total Force
- The time-averaged force exerted on each boundary face over a time-step.
- DEM Total Impulse
- The total impulse (force integrated over time) exerted on each boundary face over a time-step.
- Erosion Rate
- The sum of Abrasive Wear Rate and Impact Wear Rate. This field function is available only if the Abrasive or Impact Wear Rate models are activated.
- Incident Mass Flux
- Computes the instantaneous mass flux of one DEM phase escaping through a boundary. This field function is valid only for boundaries not using DEM mode.
- Impact Wear Rate
- Computes the estimated loss of mass material per second due to particle impact. This field function is available only if the Impact Wear Rate model is activated. See Modeling Erosion in the Discrete Element Method.
- Maximum Magnitude DEM Total Force
- The maximum force exerted on each boundary face during a time-step.
Simulation History Phase Data
Use simulation history files to save scalar and vector data on selected DEM phases.
By default, simulation history files record data from the following field functions:
- When the Cylindrical Particles model is active:
- Cylinder Height
- Cylinder Radius
- When the DEM Phase Interaction model is active:
- Contact Centroid
