Simulation Operations: Transient-transient Multi-Timescale Conjugate Heat Transfer
An important analysis for automotive applications is to simulate the thermal behavior of components during cold-start conditions. As the timescales involved in fluctuating fluid behavior often varies significantly from the timescales in solid thermal behavior, it is not efficient to run an implicitly coupled conjugate heat transfer simulation. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides a coupling strategy that permits distinct transient timescales for the solid and fluid components.
Analyzing the Simulation Results
The heating process of the exhaust manifold can be visualized through the temperature scene and the plots created in the previous step.

      For CHT simulations where the same timescale applies in both regions, you can use an implicit solution procedure that solves equations in both regions simultaneously. When the timescales differ, however, you must solve equations in each region consecutively. For this reason, an explicit mapped interface is required that can also provide time-averaged data to the solid side.

      The flow of exhaust gas and the heating of the solid manifold are both simulated with the implicit unsteady time solver using different time step sizes. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ handles multiple time step sizes using time scales—one time scale for each continuum.

      The exhaust manifold of this tutorial is part of a four-stroke four cylinder engine. Within one engine cycle the crankshaft completes two revolutions (720 deg). These quantities are obtained from a 1D engine block simulation for one engine cycle.

Analyzing the Simulation Results

The heating process of the exhaust manifold can be visualized through the temperature scene and the plots created in the previous step.

Right-click the Scenes > Temperature nodes and select Open.
To add the solution time annotation, select the Tools > Annotations > Solution Time node and drag it to the opened scene.

The volume averaged temperature of the exhaust manifold reached 577.8°C after 350s with 19 data exchanges. The lengths of the fluid and solid runs in each engine cycle are not constant, they are controlled through the stopping criteria defined underneath the time scales.

The heating up process of the solid region can be monitored in the plot Volume Averaged Temperature (C).
