Simulation Operations: Transient-transient Multi-Timescale Conjugate Heat Transfer
An important analysis for automotive applications is to simulate the thermal behavior of components during cold-start conditions. As the timescales involved in fluctuating fluid behavior often varies significantly from the timescales in solid thermal behavior, it is not efficient to run an implicitly coupled conjugate heat transfer simulation. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides a coupling strategy that permits distinct transient timescales for the solid and fluid components.
Loading the Starting File and Generating the Volume Mesh
For this tutorial, you are provided with a simulation file that contains predefined objects.

      For CHT simulations where the same timescale applies in both regions, you can use an implicit solution procedure that solves equations in both regions simultaneously. When the timescales differ, however, you must solve equations in each region consecutively. For this reason, an explicit mapped interface is required that can also provide time-averaged data to the solid side.

These quantities are obtained from a 1D engine block simulation for one engine cycle.

Loading the Starting File and Generating the Volume Mesh

For this tutorial, you are provided with a simulation file that contains predefined objects.

Load the initial simulation:

Launch Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and select File > Load.
In the Load a File dialog:
1. Click Browse.
2. In the Open dialog, navigate to the heatTransferAndRadiation folder of the downloaded tutorial files and select the file transient_multiscale_start.sim.
3. Click Open, then OK.
To generate the volume mesh, right-click the Geometry > Operations node and select Execute All.
Open the mesh scene named Mesh Scene 1, right-click within the scene background and select Apply Representation to Displayers > Volume Mesh. Review the mesh as shown in the following image.

To optimize the solver performance in terms of memory usage, you reorder the mesh of the fluid and solid regions to obtain smoother distributed cell index for each partitioning.

Multi-select the regions Exhaust Gas and Manifold Solid, right-click on any of them and select Reorder Mesh.
In the Reorder Regions dialog, select Apply without further settings.
Save the simulation as transient_multiscale_run.sim.
