Advanced Surface Freeform: Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
To achieve the desired performance for a particular application, engineers often make adjustments to small areas of the geometry, or to the entire design. In 3D-CAD, you can make these small alterations using the surface freeform operation, without exporting and reimporting the geometry into Simcenter STAR-CCM+.
Importing the Starting Geometry
You are provided a CAD model of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). To manipulate the geometry using Surface Freeform, first import the CAD model into 3D-CAD.

  - 3D-CAD: Cyclone Separator

      You are provided a CAD model of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). To manipulate the geometry using Surface Freeform, first import the CAD model into 3D-CAD.
    - Wing Freeform
      To control the deformation of the wing, you place two freeform points on the wing surface. These points are positioned at the wing tip (at the quarter chord location) and the upper surface of the wing (around two-thirds of semi-span location).
    - Stabilizer Freeform
      To provide a planar surface for the stabilizer freeform, you first split the stabilizer body into two bodies using a plane. The planar surface allows Simcenter STAR-CCM+ to produce the correct linear behavior for the surface freeform operation. To perform the surface freeform, you place a freeform control point at the trailing edge wing tip. This results in a stabilizer with a higher sweep angle and a reduced angle of attack.
    - Splitting the Main Body
      Before you perform the freeform of the fuselage, split the body into six surfaces. The smaller surfaces reduce the computation time for the surface freeform operation and produce a more accurate surface definition.
    - Nose and Camera Freeform
      Once you have separated the nose from the remainder of the fuselage, you separate it from the camera collar. To do this, create sheet bodies for the nose surfaces.
    - Propeller Freeform
      To make sure the propeller shape grows uniformly, you position two control points on the trailing edge and leading edge of the propeller blade. You then pattern the blade around the propeller hub. This produces a propeller system with three identical blades positioned equidistantly around the propeller hub.
  - 3D-CAD: Defeature and Repair using the European Truck
    In some modeling scenarios the level of detail in an imported CAD file is higher than necessary for the simulation. To simplify geometry in these cases, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides geometry repair and defeaturing tools within 3D-CAD, along with a shape-based search function.
  - 3D-CAD Advanced Preparation: Repairing An Exhaust
    Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides a suite of tools in 3D-CAD that you can use to prepare and repair imported CAD geometry so that it becomes suitable for simulation. CAD geometries that are suitable for manufacturing are not necessarily ready for simulation due to the tolerances that a manufacturing process can accept.

Importing the Starting Geometry

You are provided a CAD model of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). To manipulate the geometry using Surface Freeform, first import the CAD model into 3D-CAD.

Launch Simcenter STAR-CCM+.
Start a new simulation.
Select File > Import > Import CAD Model into 3D-CAD....
In the Open dialog, navigate to the Geometry folder of the downloaded tutorial bundle.
See Downloading the Tutorial Files from the Support Center Portal.
Select uav_start.x_b then click Open.
Click (Model Visibility) and activate All Edges.
In the Visualization toolbar, click (Save-Restore-Select Views) and select Views > -X-Y+Z > Up +Z
Save the simulation as uav_surfaceFreeform.sim.
