    This tutorial incorporates both multi-region conjugate heat transfer and natural convection in a Simcenter STAR-CCM+ simulation.

    - Importing the Surface Mesh
      The provided file, multiTimeScaleCHT_geom.x_b, contains a fluid part and a solid part and the interface between them. To set up the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ simulation, first launch a new simulation and import the supplied geometry.

      In an implicit CHT simulation, the heat transfer is solved through contact interfaces without any mapping procedure. However, a multi-timescale simulation solves the two regions consecutively. The energy coupling is achieved using an explicit mapped contact interface where the Boundary Heat Flux and Specified Y+ Heat Transfer Coefficient are exchanged across the interface.

      To simplify the scenario being modeled, for the fluid region you define constant temperature and constant velocity at the inlet.

As the timescales involved in fluctuating fluid behavior often varies significantly from the timescales in solid thermal behavior, it is not efficient to run an implicitly coupled conjugate heat transfer simulation. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides a coupling strategy that permits distinct transient timescales for the solid and fluid components.

Creating Mesh Thresholds for Post-processing

You create two mesh thresholds to display the temperature in the exhaust manifold volume.

Create a mesh threshold that contains all cells above Z = 0.0 m.

Right-click the Derived Parts node and select New > Threshold.

In the Create Threshold dialog, set the following properties:

Input Parts	Gas Manifold (Thermal)
Scalar	Position[Z]
Extraction Mode	All Above
Threshold Value	0.0 m
Display	New Surface Displayer

Click Create followed by Close.
Select the Threshold node and rename it to Mesh Threshold 1.

Create a mesh threshold that contains all cells with x coordinate greater than 0.0315 m.

Right-click the Derived Parts node and select New > Threshold.

In the Create Threshold dialog, set the following properties:

Input Parts	Gas Manifold (Thermal)
Scalar	Position[X]
Extraction Mode	All Above
Threshold Value	0.0315 m
Display	No Displayer

Click Create followed by Close.
Select the Threshold node and rename it to Mesh Threshold 2.

Save the simulation.
