Free-Shear Modification

For flows that are dominated by free-shear layers (such as jets or mixing layers) or when free-stream turbulence is high, the Standard K-Omega model tends to underpredict the production of ω. Free-shear modifications are designed to counteract this effect.

The following free-shear modifications are available in Simcenter STAR-CCM+:

Free-Shear Modification Formulation
Dissipation Limiter

fβ* in Eqn. (1215) is defined as follows:

Figure 1. EQUATION_DISPLAY
fβ*={1   for χk01+680χk21+400χk2   for χk>0
(1231)

where:

χk=kωω3
Cross-diffusion Limiter

The following term is added to the specific dissipation rate equation Eqn. (1216) as an additional source term:

Figure 2. EQUATION_DISPLAY
CDω=σdρωkyωy
(1232)

where:

σd={0,kyωy018,kyωy>0

Additionally, the function fβ* is set to unity.
