Setting Up Simulation Effect for Simulation Parameters

The Simulation Effect of a simulation parameter indicates how the parameter affects the simulation. To optimize the design exploration process, where two or more designs have the same Geometry and Meshing parameters, the mesh is computed only once and then reused for all of the similar designs. The mesh is cached and reloaded when required, instead of being computed repeatedly.

If all of the simulation parameters affect meshing (that is, the Simulation Effect is set to Unknown, Geometry, or Meshing for every parameter), there is no possibility of reusing a mesh so caching is disabled.

In case of a mesh reuse, only the solve and result blocks are re-executed during a study run. See also: Study Runs.
Mesh reuse is available for the following design study types:
  • Sweep
  • DOE(2 Level and 3 Level only)
  • Manual
To set up Simulation Effect of a simulation parameter:
In the Design Manager Project file, select the Simulations > [reference simulation] > Parameters > Simulation Parameters > [simulation parameter] node and set Simulation Effect to one of the following types:
  • Unknown: Implies the parameter affects everything (that is, geometry, meshing, and solver).

  • Geometry: The parameter affects the geometry (which implies it also affects meshing and solver).

  • Meshing: The parameter affects meshing (which implies it also affects the solver).

  • Solver: The parameter affects the solver only.

When you load a reference simulation into a Design Manager project, by default, 3D-CAD and CAD Client parameters have Simulation Effect set to Geometry, and global parameters have Simulation Effect set to Unknown. You must modify this setting accordingly when you load the reference simulation. See Updating a Design Manager Project.

For Design Manager project files that were saved in Simcenter STAR-CCM+ version 2019.2 or earlier, the Simulation Effect is set to Unknown for all parameters. You can update the reference simulation to use the default settings (Simulation Effect resets to Geometry for 3D-CAD and CAD Client parameters), or edit the settings manually.
