Co-simulation involves a strong coupling between the two codes, in which data exchange occurs at frequent intervals, that are known as coupling steps. In this case, data is exchanged at the end of each time-step, and a relatively large time-step is used to approximate a steady-state solution.

    This tutorial demonstrates how to carry out a mechanical co-simulation case using Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and Abaqus. Co-simulation involves a strong coupling between the two codes. Data is exchanged at frequent intervals that are called coupling steps. This level of communication between the solvers allows you to obtain a full solution across the fluid-solid interface.

    Simcenter STAR-CCM+ allows for one-way coupling with gPROMS, a process modeling platform for the simulation of complex systems. In Simcenter STAR-CCM+ you reduce three-dimensional solution data to discrete values defined for clusters of cells; data from these clusters can then be exported to a network in gPROMS.

    - Prerequisites
      The instructions in the GT-SUITE Co-Simulation - 1D Coupling tutorial assume that you are already familiar with certain techniques in Simcenter STAR-CCM+.
    - Preparing the File Structure
      For this tutorial, you are provided with a starting GT-SUITE simulation file, containing the engine analysis, and the intake manifold Simcenter STAR-CCM+ volume mesh. Copy these files to your working directory.
    - Modifying the GT-SUITE Simulation for Co-Simulation
      After running a standalone GT-SUITE analysis to convergence, you modify the GT-SUITE simulation for coupling with Simcenter STAR-CCM+.
    - Setting Up the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Simulation
      Prepare the intake manifold simulation in Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and modify it for co-simulation with GT-SUITE.

Importing the GT-SUITE Material Properties

Create a material database and import the material properties from the GT-SUITE simulation.

The file CFDCoupling_Setup.chemkin_GT.dbs contains a database of material properties from the GT-SUITE simulation. You can import these properties into Simcenter STAR-CCM+, so that you use identical materials in both codes.

GT-SUITE v2022 currently uses a non-standard comment character in the chemkin material database file. To make sure that Simcenter STAR-CCM+ can read the material properties from this file, first edit the file in a text editor:

Note	If you have downloaded the CFDCoupling_Setup.chemkin_GT.dbs file from the tutorial bundle, the file is already in the standard format.

Navigate to your caseFilesGT-SUITE directory and open the CFD_Coupling_Setup.chemkin_GT.dbs file in a text editor of your choice.
In the file, replace the hash character, #, at the beginning of each comment line with an exclamation mark character, !.
Save the material properties file.

To import the GT-SUITE material properties:

Right-click the Tools > Material Databases node and select New Material Database...
Rename the matl node as GT-SUITE Materials.
Right-click the GT-SUITE Materials node, and select Import Thermodynamic and Transport Properties...
In the Open dialog, navigate to the caseFilesGT-SUITE directory, select CFDCoupling_Setup.chemkin_GT.dbs, and click Open.
In the Import Properties dialog, select Import properties for all materials and click OK.
Open the GT-SUITE Materials > Gases node.
The GT-SUITE material properties appear as shown below:
