Setting Boundary Conditions

The boundary conditions for the farfield are specified so as to account for the angle of attack with which the wing faces the oncoming flow.

  1. Before setting the physical conditions, create a parameter to specify an angle of attack of 3.06° for the initial velocity:
    1. Right-click the Automation > Parameters node and select New > Scalar.
    2. Rename the Parameters > Scalar node as AoA and set the following properties:
      Property Setting
Dimensions Angle (In the Dimensions dialog, set Angle = 1)
      Value 3.06 deg
  2. Edit the Regions > Fluid > Boundaries > Fluid.Farfield > Physics Values node and set the following properties:
    Node Property Value
    Flow Direction Method Composite
    Composite > X Component Value cos(${AoA})
    Composite > Z Component Value sin(${AoA})
    Mach Number Value 0.8395
    Static Temperature Value 300 K
    Turbulent Viscosity Ratio Value 0.2105

For external aerodynamic applications that use the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model, studies have shown that a turbulent viscosity ratio of 0.2105 on the freestream boundary is recommended.

  3. Save the simulation.
