Anisotropic Volume Meshing: Onera M6 Wing
When meshing aerospace geometries such as wings, propeller blades, or turbine blades, you are required to generate a very fine mesh that adequately captures the curvature of the leading and trailing edges. To help reduce the cell count while maintaining solution accuracy, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides an anisotropic meshing option by which you can refine these edges.
Loading the Simulation
You start this tutorial by loading a simulation file that contains the Onera M6 wing.

      After assigning parts to regions and setting the boundary types, you can define the mesh settings for the volume mesh. For this simulation, you generate an anisotropic and aligned volume mesh based on an initial quadrilateral surface mesh.

      Physics models define the physical variables and phenomena in the simulation. In this tutorial, the air is described by the ideal gas law and turbulence is accounted for by the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model.

In order to compare simulation results with experimental results, you create a normalized coordinate for a section of the wing.

  - Adaptive Mesh Refinement: Hypersonic Flow
    Hypersonic flows and flight envelopes present unique challenges in Computational Flow Dynamics. The extreme gradients and shocks can push flow solvers to their limits and resolving the flow features, particularly shock formation, is of paramount importance in obtaining valid converged solutions. In Simcenter STAR-CCM+, you can apply Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) to accurately resolve developing shocks using refinement based on solution gradients.

Loading the Simulation

You start this tutorial by loading a simulation file that contains the Onera M6 wing.

Load the initial simulation:

Launch Simcenter STAR-CCM+.
Select File > Load....
In the Load a File dialog, activate Parallel on Local Host and set Compute Processes to 4.
In the Open dialog, navigate to the compressibleflow folder of the downloaded tutorials bundle.

Click Browse and select anisotropic_OneraM6Wing_Start.sim then click Open.
In the Load a File dialog, click OK.
Save the simulation as anisotropic_OneraM6Wing.sim.
