Modeling Volume Fraction Reinitialization

The Volume Fraction Reinitialization model allows you to increase or decrease the interface sharpness by reinitializing the volume fraction field of the solution. You can selectively apply the reinitialization in a prescribed zone and specify how often reinitialization takes place.

The Volume Fraction Reinitialization is available as an optional model in the physics continuum when the Volume of Fluid (VOF) multiphase model is activated. You can use this model to instantly increase or decrease the interface sharpness by specifying a target interface width for the reinitialization of the volume fraction field. The Volume Fraction Reinitialization model can be used to re-sharpen the interface by using the same triggering mechanism as remeshing.

To model volume fraction initialization:
  1. Activate the Volume Fraction Reinitialization model:
    1. For an existing physics continuum with VOF multiphase, within the Optional Models group box of the physics model selection dialog, add the Volume Fraction Reinitialization model.
    2. Select the Models > Volume Fraction Reinitialization node and set the Target Interface Width properties.
After specifying the target interface width, you set up the volume fraction reinitialization solver.
  1. Select the Solvers > Volume Fraction Reinitialization node and set the properties. Refer to Volume Fraction Reinitialization Solver Properties for details.
  2. To specify how often reinitialization takes place, select the Volume Fraction Reinitialization > Trigger node and set Trigger to one of the following:
    • Iteration
    • Time Step
    • Delta Time
    • Update Event
