Monitoring the Rotor Force

To assess how the solution varies with time, you can monitor the fluid loads as the simulation runs. Additionally, you can monitor the displacement at a point on the blade.

To monitor the displacement at the tip of blade 1 towards the leading edge, create a point probe:
  1. Right-click the Derived Parts node and select New > Probe > Point.
  2. In the Create Point Probe dialog select No Displayer, then click Create and Close.
  3. Rename Derived Parts > Point to Blade LE.
  4. Select Blade LE and set the following properties:
    Property Value
    Parts Regions > Blade 1 > Boundaries > Blade 1
    Point [1.9981, 0.024606, 0.0]
    Coordinate System Laboratory
    Follow Motion Enabled
  5. Right-click the Reports node and select New > User > Maximum.
  6. Rename the Reports > Maximum 1 node to LE Displacement.
  7. Select LE Displacement and set the following properties:
    Property
    Field Function Co-Simulations > Co-Simulation: Displacement > Magnitude
Parts Derived Parts > Blade LE
    Smooth Values Enabled
To monitor the forces:
  1. Right-click the Reports node and select New > Flow/Energy > Force.
  2. Rename the Force 1 report to Rotor Force.
  3. Select Rotor Force and set the following properties:
    Property Value
    Direction [0.0, 0.0, 1.0]
    Parts
    • Regions > Blade 1 > Boundaries > Blade 1
    • Regions > Blade 2 > Boundaries > Blade 2
    • Regions > Blade 3 > Boundaries > Blade 3
    • Regions > Blade 4 > Boundaries > Blade 4
  4. Create another force report and name it Blade 1 Force.
  5. Select the Blade 1 Force report and set the following properties:
    Property Value
    Direction [0.0, 0.0, 1.0]
    Parts

    Regions > Blade 1 > Boundaries > Blade 1

  6. Right-click the Report node and select New > User > Expression.
  7. Select the Expression 1 report and set the following properties:
    Property Value
    Definition ${Azimuth Angle}
    Dimensions Angle
    Units deg
  8. Rename the Expression 1 report to Azimuth Angle.
  9. Multi-select the LE Displacement, Rotor Force, and Blade 1 Force reports.
  10. Right-click one of the selected reports and select Create Monitor and Plot from Report.
  11. In the Create Plot From Reports... dialog, select Multiple Plots (one per report).
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ adds plots of the Rotor Force Monitor and the Blade 1 Force against physical time under the Plots node.
  12. Right-click the Azimuth Angle report and select Create Monitor from Report.
By default the Blade 1 Force and LE Displacement plots are plotted against time. To plot against the Azimuth Angle, you edit the properties of the plot nodes.
  1. Multi-select the Plots > Blade 1 Force Monitor Plot and LE Displacement Monitor Plot and set the following properties:
    Property Value
    X-Axis Monitor Azimuth Angle Monitor
    X-Axis Monitor Units deg
  2. Save the simulation.
