Nucleation Model Family Reference

Nucleation is the creation of new particles from the continuous phase. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ models nucleation as a combination of a population balance nucleation model and a mass transfer nucleation model.

Requires

An Eulerian Multiphase simulation with a Continuous-Dispersed phase interaction. The appropriate phase interaction model activated:

  • For Crystal Nucleation

The Single Component Crystal Growth or Single Component Crystal Growth From Melt model.

  • For User-Defined Nucleation

The User-Defined Interphase Mass Flux model.

In the phase interaction model selection dialog:

  • The population balance nucleation model activated:

Optional Models: MuSiG Nucleation or S-Gamma Nucleation.

The available model corresponds to the particle size distribution model that is activated in the particle phase.

  • The mass transfer nucleation model activated:

Nucleation: Crystal Nucleation (activated automatically when a crystal growth model is active) or User-Defined Nucleation (activated automatically when the User-Defined Interphase Mass Flux model is active)

The available model corresponds to the interphase mass transfer model that is activated in the phase interaction.

Nucleation Model Controls

The following child nodes are available:

Nucleation Rate
This value is N˙0 in Eqn. (2406).
Nucleation Rate Concentration Derivative
The derivative of the nucleation rate with respect to the concentration of the solute. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ uses this value for linearization purposes.
Applies to Crystal Nucleation only.
Nucleation Rate Temperature Derivative
The derivative of the nucleation rate with respect to the temperature of the solute. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ uses this value for linearization purposes.
Applies to Crystal Nucleation only.
Nucleus Diameter
This value is L0 in Eqn. (2406).
