Reactions—Species Transport

Using reacting species transport, all species in the mechanism are convected and diffused through the computational domain, and react using the prescribed chemical mechanism.

The following reacting species transport models are available in Simcenter STAR-CCM+:
  • Complex Chemistry: Useful when chemical kinetic phenomena are important, for example calculation of slowly forming species such as CO or for prediction of ignition and extinction. Suitable for handling many reactions since an ODE solver is used to integrate the chemical source terms for all species over the CFD time-step through adaptive time-step subcycling in each cell.
  • Eddy Break-Up (EBU): Useful when only the flame position is of interest. The reaction is limited by the single turbulent mixing time-scale, so EBU is only suitable for mechanisms with a few reaction steps.
  • Eddy Contact Micromixing (ECM): Useful for diffusion-limited reactions in liquid-liquid chemistry. The reaction is limited by the single turbulent mixing time-scale, so ECM is only suitable for mechanisms with a few reaction steps.
