Conformal Tetrahedral Meshing Across Operations

When using the tetrahedral mesher, you can generate a conformal mesh across parts that are assigned to different Automated Mesh Operations.

The following conditions must be satisfied in order to successfully generate a conformal tetrahedral mesh:
  • Triangular and quadrilateral meshes are allowed on the upstream mesh.
  • The perimeter of cell faces that are on the surface of one part must match with the coincident cell faces on the contacting part, as otherwise the imprinting step may fail.
  • Sizes must be relatively compatible on the two meshes. If the sizes are very different, then the imprinting step is likely to fail. Generally, failure begins to occur when mesh sizes on one side are around 10 times longer than the other side.
  • Any internal feature on the target side (that is the side of the contact in the current operation) are not preserved.
  1. To activate the conformal option:
    1. Select the Automated Mesh > Meshers > Tetrahedral Mesher node.
    2. In the Properties window, activate Conformal To Existing Mesh.
A new Conformal Contacts node appears under the Default Controls node.
  2. To select conformal contacts:
    1. Select Automated Mesh > Default Controls > Conformal Contacts.
    2. Click (Custom Editor) to the right of the Contacts property.
    3. In the Conformal Contacts dialog, select the appropriate contacts.
    4. Click OK to close the dialog.
To make sure that the mesh is conformal, all contacting parts must use the Tetrahedral core volume mesher.

You can also use the Thin Mesher in combination with the Tetrahedral Mesher. This combination of meshers generates a conformal quadrilateral mesh at the contacts between the mesh operations. You can only select the Thin Mesher in the upstream mesh—the Thin Mesher does not support quadrilateral meshes as an input. If you select the Thin Mesher in the downstream mesh, the meshing operation fails.

The following screenshot shows an example of an analysis from an electrical machine with and without the conformal option.

When you execute the downstream mesh operation, the quadrilateral faces are maintained by inserting pyramid cells into the tetrahedral mesh.
