The Meshing Workflow

This section contains the recommended workflow for setting up and generating the volume mesh at the parts level.

For Parts-Based Meshing the meshing detaches from the physics and provides a flexible and repeatable meshing pipeline.

The procedure for generating a mesh can differ depending on what you want to simulate, however the general steps to follow to generate a mesh are typically the same.

  1. Prepare the geometry for meshing using part operations.
  2. If necessary, wrap your geometry.
To preserve geometric fidelity, perform partial wrapping and omit parts that do not require wrapping. See Surface Wrapper Defeature.
  3. Imprint all parts together to automatically create part contacts.
  4. If part contacts occur between two part surfaces in the geometry and have not been defined automatically, create them now:
    1. To browse or find part contacts automatically, multi-select the required parts, right-click, and choose Browse Part/Part Contacts, or Find > Part/Part Contacts..
    2. To create part contacts manually, multi-select and right-click the parts in contact, then choose Create Part/Part Contact.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ aims to generate a conformal mesh at part contacts. Each part contact becomes an interface in the physics region.
  5. Extract the simulation domain.
Typically you extract the internal or external volume. See Extract Volume.
  6. Remesh the surface and generate the volume mesh. See Generating the Surface and Volume Mesh.
