Preparing the Simulation for Stress Analysis

The thermal analysis is complete and you are now ready to set up the simulation for stress analysis. As the thermal and stress analyses use different discretization methods, FV and FE respectively, they require separate regions and continua.

To create the solid region for stress analysis, start by duplicating the manifold part:
  1. Right-click the Geometry > Parts > Manifold (Thermal) node and select Duplicate.
  2. Rename the new part, Manifold (Thermal) copy, to Manifold (Stress).
In this tutorial, you apply constraints at specific vertices on the manifold model. In order to apply constraints at vertices, the vertices must be available as part points. For this tutorial, you require three points at the following locations on the manifold base:

To create the required part points, mark the relevant vertices as feature vertices in 3D-CAD:

  1. Right-click the Manifold (Stress) part and select Edit in 3D-CAD.
  2. In 3D-CAD, rename the 3D-CAD Model 2 > Body Groups > Manifold (Thermal) node to Manifold (Stress).
  3. In the 3D-CAD View 1 scene, identify the first vertex:


  4. Right-click the vertex and select Rename. In the Rename dialog, enter Vertex 1 and click OK.
    Simcenter STAR-CCM+ adds the vertex under the Manifold (Stress) > Named Vertices node.
  5. Using the same procedure, identify the second vertex and rename it to Vertex 2.


  6. Finally, identify the third vertex and rename it to Vertex 3.




  7. Close 3D-CAD.
  8. Right-click the Geometry > Parts > Manifold (Stress) node and select Update.
    Simcenter STAR-CCM+ adds part points corresponding to the feature vertices on the CAD model.

Assign the manifold part to a new region:
  1. Right-click the Manifold (Stress) node and select Assign Parts to Regions...
  2. In the Assign Parts to Regions dialog:
    1. Select the following options:
      Property Setting
      Region option Create a Region for Each Part
      Interface option Do Not Create Interfaces From Contacts
    2. Click Apply then Close.


    Simcenter STAR-CCM+ automatically assigns the Manifold (Stress) region to one of the existing physics continua. In the next section, create a physics continuum for stress analysis and assign it to the Manifold (Stress) region.
  3. Save the simulation as manifold_stress.
