Loading the Initial Simulation

For this tutorial, you are provided with a starting simulation that includes a predefined conjugate heat transfer analysis, with which you compute the steady-state temperature distribution in the fluid and the manifold.

To load the initial simulation:
  1. Launch Simcenter STAR-CCM+.
  2. Select File > Load...
  3. In the Load a File dialog, click Browse...
  4. In the Open dialog, navigate to the solidStress folder of the downloaded tutorial files.
  5. Select manifold_start.sim and click Open.
  6. In the Load a File dialog, click OK.
As the main focus of this tutorial is the application of thermal loads in FE stress analysis, the starting simulation file is already set up for FV conjugate heat transfer analysis. The starting simulation includes:
  • geometry parts and corresponding FV regions, to represent the manifold and the fluid
  • an automated mesh operation, to generate a polyhedral mesh for both parts
  • a parts-based interface between the solid and fluid regions, for conjugate heat transfer
  • physics models, thermal material properties, and boundary conditions for CHT analysis
  • solver settings and stopping criteria
  • scalar scenes to monitor the temperature throughout the manifold and the fluid

You can review the simulation settings by expanding the relevant nodes. Refer to the tutorial introduction for an overview of the thermal analysis, Thermal Stress from Mapped Temperature Data: Exhaust Manifold.

  1. Save the simulation to your working directory as manifold_thermal.sim.
