Specifying the Material Components

Specify the material components for each phase, and set the material properties.

You set the material properties for each individual phase and set the material properties for the mixture. For a multi-component phase, you also set the material properties for each individual component of the phase.
  1. Specify the material components for each phase.
The example steps below are for the liquid phase.
    For a single-component liquid:
    1. Right-click the Models > Liquid > H2O node, and then click Replace with....
    2. In the Replace Material dialog, select the appropriate liquid.
    For a multi-component liquid:
    1. Right-click the Models > Multi-Component Liquid > Liquid Components node, and then click Select Mixture Components.
    2. In the Select Mixture Components dialog, select the appropriate components.

The steps for the gas phase are identical. However, in some cases, the gaseous form of the solvent is not available in the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ material database. To specify the gaseous component, you can add the appropriate material to the material database.

  2. Specify the material properties for the mixture, for each phase, and for each component (if applicable).
The example steps below are for a liquid phase.
    1. Specify the following mixture properties under the [physics continuum] > Models > Multiphase > Mixture > Material Properties node:
      • Density
      • Dynamic Viscosity
      • Specific Heat (when an energy model is activated)
      • Thermal Conductivity (when an energy model is activated)
    2. Specify the following phase properties under the [physics continuum] > Models > Multiphase > Eulerian Phases > [liquid phase] > Models > Multi-Component Liquid > Material Properties node:
      • Density
      • Dynamic Viscosity
      • Molecular Diffusivity
      • Molecular Weight
      • Saturation Pressure (applies to single-component phases only)
      • Specific Heat (when an energy model is activated)
      • Thermal Conductivity (when an energy model is activated)
      • Turbulent Schmidt Number (applies to turbulent flows only)
    3. Specify the following component properties under the [liquid phase] > Models > Multi-Component Liquid > Liquid Components > [component] > Material Properties node:
      • Density
      • Dynamic Viscosity
      • Molecular Weight
      • Specific Heat (when an energy model is activated)
      • Thermal Conductivity (when an energy model is activated)
