Setting Boundary Conditions

As the VOF model uses multiple Eulerian phases, it is necessary to set the volume fraction of each phase at appropriate boundaries.

The volume fractions (and the species mass fractions or mole fractions, for multi-component phases) should sum to 1.0.

Simcenter STAR-CCM+ automatically normalizes the volume fractions if:

  • the volume fractions sum to greater than 1.0.

  • the volume fractions sum to less than 1.0, but are all non-zero values.

However, if the volume fractions sum to less than 1.0 and include a zero value, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ displays an error message.

The following boundary conditions apply to specific VOF applications:

  • If surface tension effects are included in the simulation, all closed (wall) boundaries also contain an additional Contact Angle sub-node. This node lets you specify the contact angle at each of these boundaries.
  • If a stagnation inlet is used with a VOF mixture for supersonic inflow, only a single phase of the VOF mixture is allowed to enter the domain through each inlet boundary.
For each boundary:
  1. Select the Regions > [region] > Boundaries > [boundary] > Physics Values > Volume Fraction node, and select the appropriate method:
    • Composite
    • Composite N-1
    • Constant

For descriptions of the available methods, see Arrays of Scalar Quantities.

  2. Set the value for each phase.
