Progress Variable
Within a combustion system, combustion takes place in a thin layer that divides the whole domain between unburnt and fully burnt mixtures. By defining a quantity that represents this distinction in each computational cell, it is possible to solve a transport equation that tracks the progress of transition from the unburnt to fully burnt states.
The progress variable indicates whether the chemical state within a cell represents the unburnt conditions (), burnt conditions (), or something in-between ().
Source terms are calculated depending on the specific combustion model.
