Shell Region Reference

The Three-Dimensional model is used with shell regions.

You can use the following methods to create a shell region:
  • Right-click the Regions node and select New > Shell Region.

The new shell region can then be assigned to shell parts.

  • Under the Geometry > Parts node, right-click a shell part and select Set Region > New....

Shell Region Properties

Index
Index reference for shell region (read-only).
Physics Continuum
Defines the fluid film phase or physics continuum that is associated with this region. Only physics continua where the Three-Dimensional space model is selected, or where no space model is selected, are shown in the drop-down menu.
Parts
List of parts that are associated with this region. Editing the property accesses the in-place object selector to add or remove parts.
Type
Defines the type of the shell region depending on the region from which it was created: fluid, solid, or porous.
Topology
Defines the topology region.
Tags
Defines a list of user-defined tags. For more information, see Tagging Simulation Objects.
Allow Per-Part Values
Adds the Part Subgroupings node.

Shell Region Right-Click Options

Transform

Scales, translates, rotates, or reflects the selected regions and all associated boundaries. These actions operate on one or multiple regions, and if more than one region is selected, the transform action is applied to each region in sequence.

Method Description
Scale...

See Scaling Regions.

Translate...

See Translating Regions.

Rotate...

See Rotating Regions.

Reflect...

See Reflecting Regions.

Reorder Mesh
Reorders the internal references to cells in the mesh region in order to optimize the solver performance in terms of memory usage.
Solution > Clear

Clears the solution data from the individual region only. See Clearing Solution Data from a Region.

Shell Region Field Functions

When the Three Dimensional space model is activated, the following shell-related field functions are made available. These functions are available at both shell interfaces and shell boundaries.

Shell Area

The area normal (the outer normal to the bulk domain). This function is analogous to the Area and Volume field functions.

Shell Area Change

The ratio of the area of a face to that of its largest neighbor. This function is analogous to the Volume Change field function.

Shell Chevron Face Indicator

The face chevron quality, estimated as in the 3D variant (the Chevron Quality Indicator field function).

Shell Face Aspect Ratio

The aspect ratio of a face. This function is analogous to the Cell Aspect Ratio field function.

Shell Face Skewness Angle

Measures the angle between the centroid connection and the normal (in the film plane, surface curvature is not counted as skewness). This function is analogous to the Cell Skewness Angle field function.

Shell Face Warpage Quality

Measures the face warpage as in the 3D variant (the Cell Warpage Quality field function), but for faces only.

Zero Shell Edge Length Indicator

Marks neighbors of faces that have near-zero edge length. This field function has the value of unity if the length of any of the edges approaches zero; otherwise it has a value of zero.

This function is analogous to the Zero Face Area Indicator field function.

Zero Shell Face Area Indicator

Marks neighbors of faces that have near-zero area. This field function has the value of unity if the area of any of the faces approaches zero; otherwise it has a value of zero.
