Asynchronous Post-Processing

Design Manager allows you to create additional post-processing objects in a single simulation (design or reference) after a design study has been run, and then executes an update on all designs so that their simulation files also receive the additional objects. This methodology works best when you save the simulation files for each design.

To create and apply post-processing after a design study has completed its run:
  1. Right-click the Design Studies > [design study] node and select Open Output Table.
  2. For a design within whose simulation file you wish to insert additional post-processing objects, right-click the entry in the Output Table and select Open for Post Processing.

NoteThis option is disabled if you chose to not save the design simulations files.
  3. In the Open simulation for post processing window, select any process options and click OK.

The corresponding simulation file opens in post-processing only mode. In this mode, you can only add or modify post-processing objects such as reports, scenes and plots. You can also add or modify derived parts.

  4. In the design simulation file, create any additional derived parts that you require (or modify existing ones) and similarly add or modify reports, scenes or plots.
  5. When you are done with making changes to the chosen design simulation, do the following:
    1. Close the design simulation.
    2. In the Apply Changes? dialog click Apply.

Design Manager applies the changes you made in the design simulation to the reference simulation. In a later step you apply the changes from the reference simulation to all the other design simulations so that they are synchronized.
Because the reference simulation now contains objects that the other design simulations do not, all designs are marked out of date as shown:

  6. Before you update all the designs with the new objects, you can add or modify post-processing objects within the design study itself in order to view them once you update the results. You can do this as follows:
    1. To add additional scenes, select the Design Studies > [design study] > Scenes node and update scenes using the Custom Editor within the Properties window.
    2. To add additional plots, select the Design Studies > [design study] > Plots node and update plots using the Custom Editor within the Properties window.
  7. To propagate the post-processing changes throughout the designs, right-click the Design Studies > [design study] node and select Update Results.

Alternatively you can update results for selected designs only as follows:
    • In the Output Table, multi-select target designs using the <ctrl> key, then right-click and select Update Results.
    • Right-click the Design Studies > [design study] > Design Sets > [design set] node and select Update Results.
NoteYou are advised to do the synchronization step using the same version of Simcenter STAR-CCM+ as you used for adding or modifying post-prcessing objects.
When running the Update Results operation Design Manager opens each simulation, synchronizes the post-processing changes and extracts the new output to the Design Manager project. If there is no Simulation file present for a particular design, Design Manager re-runs the designs to generate the results.
As an alternative to Step 1, if you do not have the design simulations saved while running the study you can open the reference simulation for post-processing. To do this step, right-click the Simulations > [reference simulation] node and select Open for Post Processing..

After making changes in the reference simulation, you can propagate these changes to the design simulation as described above.
