Enclosure

An enclosure houses the components of an electronics device and usually bounds the domain for the flow analysis.

The Electronics Cooling Toolset supports the following geometry template for an Enclosure QuickPart:

If the built-in enclosure is not suitable, you can define a Custom enclosure whose geometry is based on a Construction Geometry that you specify.

Once an enclosure is created, you can fit openings and fans in the enclosure walls, see Creating and Positioning the Components.

Enclosure—Properties

The following properties are common to Rectangular and Custom enclosures:

Name Specifies the name of the enclosure under which it is stored in the tree.
Geometry
Local Origin
Specifies the position of the enclosure's local coordinate system. See X_or, Y_or, Z_or in the Graphics window. It is used as reference for placing the enclosure in the simulation domain. The following options are available:
  • Bottom Center: Center of the Zmin face.
  • Bottom Corner 1: Xmin/Ymin/Zmin corner of the enclosure.
  • Bottom Corner 2: Xmin/Ymax/Zmin corner of the enclosure.
  • Center: Center of the geometry.
  • Custom: This value appears when you set the local origin interactively within the Graphics window, see Placing Object Interactively.
Placement See Placement properties.
Physics
Material
Specifies the material of the enclosure. You can choose from the Solid Sim Materials that you define in the Setup panel.
Heat Source
Specifies the total heat that the enclosure generates.

The following geometry properties characterize the different enclosure types:

Rectangular—Specific Properties

Geometry
X, Y, Z
Specifies the size of the enclosure in x-, y-, and z-direction, in the enclosure's local coordinate system. See X_or, Y_or, Z_or in the Graphics window.
Thickness
Specifies the sheeting thickness.
Shell Outward
When activated, X, Y, and Z define the size of the enclosure's inner volume. The total size of the enclosure is increased in all directions by the specified Thickness value.
Calculate Size from Selected QuickParts
Allows you to create an enclosure that includes specific QuickParts. The extent of the block in the respective coordinate direction is calculated based on the maximum distance between two of the selected QuickParts in that coordinate direction. You can extend the size of the block by adding an offset in negative and positive coordinate direction.

Custom—Specific Properties

Geometry
Selected Construction Geometry
Specifies the Construction Geometry that describes the geometry of the enclosure. If you select multiple Construction Geometries when creating a Custom enclosure, the Electronics Cooling Toolset automatically creates multiple enclosures that own the same physics properties.
