Applying the Constraints to the Solid Region

To constrain the solid region, you apply four constraints.

These constraints are:

  • Rigid contact constraint that models the contact between the diaphragm and the plunger.
  • Rigid contact constraint that models the contact between the seal and the housing.
  • Fixed constraint that connects the diaphragm to the housing.
  • Displacement constraint that models the symmetry condition.
  1. To create the rigid contact constraint between the plunger and the diaphragm:
    1. Right-click the Regions > Structure > Segments node and select Create Segment > Surface Segment.
    2. Rename Surface Segment 1 to ContactPlunger.
    3. Set Surfaces to Diaphraghm > Surfaces > Rim_Top, Top, and Top_SealImprint.
    4. Select the Contact Plunger node and set the following properties:
      Node Property Setting
      ContactPlunger Type Constraint
Physics Conditions > Solid Stress Constraints Method Rigid Contact
Physics Conditions > Rigid Contact Obstacle Contact Obstacle Tessellated Geometry Parts
Physics Values > Tessellated Geometry Parts Tessellated Geometry Parts Plunger
      Rigid Motion Translation
Physics Values > Penalty Contact Enforcement Penalty Parameter 1.0E11 Pa/m
  2. To create the rigid contact constraint between the seal and housing:
    1. Right-click the Structure > Segments node and select Create Segment > Surface Segment.
    2. Rename Surface Segment 1 to ContactSealAndHousing.
    3. Set Surfaces to Seal > Surfaces > Bottom.
    4. Select the ContactSealAndHousing node and set the following properties:
      Node Property Setting
      ContactSealAndHousing Type Constraint
Physics Conditions > Solid Stress Constraints Method Rigid Contact
Create a new coordinate system for the ContactSealAndHousing:
    5. Right-click the Tools > Coordinate Systems > Laboratory > Local Coordinate Systems node and select New > Cartesian.
    6. In the Edit dialog, set Origin to [0.0,0.0,12.5]mm,mm,mm and click Create then Close.
    7. Rename Cartesian 1 to ContactHousing.
    8. Select the Segments > ContactSealAndHousing > Physics Values node and set the following properties:
      Node Property Setting
Penalty Contact Enforcement Penalty Parameter 1.0E11 Pa/m
      Rigid Contact Plane Origin [0.0,0.0,0.0]mm
      Normal [0.0,0.0,1.0]
      Coordinate System Laboratory > ContactHousing
  3. To create the fixed constraint for the diaphragm:
    1. Right-click the Segments node and select Create Segment > Surface Segment.
    2. Rename Surface Segment 1 to Fixed.
    3. Set the Surfaces to Diaphragm > Surfaces > Rim_Bottom, Rim_Side, Rim_Top.
    4. Select the Segments > Fixed node and set the following properties:
      Node Property Setting
      Fixed Type Constraint
Physics Conditions > Solid Stress Constraints Method Fixed (default)
  4. To create the displacement constraint for the symmetry plane:
    1. Right-click the Segments node and select Create Segment > Surface Segment.
    2. Rename Surface Segment 1 to Symmetry.
    3. Set Surfaces to Diaphragm > Surfaces > Symmetry and Seal > Surfaces > Symmetry.
    4. Select the Symmetry node and set the following properties:
      Node Property Setting
      Symmetry Type Constraint
Physics Conditions > Solid Stress Constraint Method Displacement
Physics Values > Displacement Method Composite
Physics Values > Displacement > Composite Constrain X Deactivated
      Constrain Z Deactivated
  5. Save the simulation
