View Keyboard Controls

With keystrokes, you can interact with the scene in the First Person mode. Additionally, you can make rapid changes to the scene view.

First Person Mode (WASD Keys)

Simcenter STAR-CCM+ lets you navigate through a scene using WASD controls, where the W, A, S, and D keys are used as arrow keys and the view direction is modified by moving the mouse.

The First Person interactor simulates a person walking (or flying) through a scene. Directions are therefore inverted (for example, if you move left, the model on the screen appears to move to the right).

To initiate interaction:

  • From the top menu bar, select Tools > Options.
  • In the dialog that appears, select the Options > Visualization node.
  • Set the Interactor Style property to First Person. Close the dialog.
  • Click and hold the right mouse button while the cursor is in the scene window.
  • Move around the scene by concurrently pressing the keys as described in the following table:
W Move forward
S Move backward
A Move left
D Move right
Q Roll counterclockwise along the view direction
E Roll clockwise along the view direction
Space Move up
Ctrl Move down

By moving the mouse around, you can change the direction of the view.

Rapid View Orientation

  • <R> resets the view.
  • <F> - brings the view to the front of the object.

Pressing this key again flips to the back.

Additional strokes of this key toggle between front and back.

  • <S> - brings the view to the side of the object.

Pressing this key again flips to the other side.

Additional strokes of this key toggle from one side to another.

  • Similarly, the <C> key flips the picture horizontally along a vertical axis in the center of the view.
  • <T> - brings the view to the top of the object.

Pressing this key again flips to the bottom.

Additional strokes of this key toggle between top and bottom.

You can use the <X>, <Y>, and <Z> keys to move the image around the corresponding axis.

For example, <Z> rotates the object in a negative direction around the z-axis, while <Shift><Z> rotates the object in the opposite direction.

Each keystroke turns the image 10 degrees.

The shifts are in relation to the focal point of the display.
