Visualizing the Surface Sensitivity

A specific scalar field function is available to visualize surface sensitivity. In Simcenter STAR-CCM+, noisy surface sensitivity can be smoothed using a surface sensitivity filtering.

The filtering is activated by default with the value 0.01m for Global Filter Radius. For more details, refer to Computing the Surface Sensitivity.

To visualize the surface sensitivity:
  1. Create a scalar scene.
  2. Select Scalar 1 > Scalar Field and set Function to Surface Sensitivity of [Cost Function].
The following example shows the surface sensitivity of the pressure drop through a duct:

  3. To modify the surface sensitivity smoothing globally, select the Continua > [physics continuum] > Surface Sensitivity node and modify the value for Global Filter Radius.
  4. To modify the surface sensitivity smoothing for a certain boundary:
    1. Select Regions > Boundaries > [boundary] > Physics Values > Surface Sensitivity Filter Parameters node and set Filter Option to Local Filter Radius.
    2. Modify the value for Local Filter Radius. This value overrides the global filter radius.
  5. Right-click the Solvers > Adjoint node and select Compute Surface Sensitivity.
The following image shows the surface sensitivity of the duct with increased global filter radius:
