  - Electro-Thermal Modeling: Battery Pack Cooling
    The design of battery pack thermal management is critical in order to ensure that the battery pack operates in a safe temperature range. The objective is to prevent any part of the pack from overheating or from operating in too low temperature conditions. If the battery pack is not sized accordingly, the temperature can accelerate its aging, create an imbalance of the modules and cells in the pack, or lead to hazardous situations.
  - Thermal Runaway: Battery Pack Heat Release and Venting
    Thermal runaway in batteries occurs when a battery cell overheats due to thermal or mechanical failure, short-circuiting, or overcharging/over-discharging. At elevated temperatures, the battery cell materials can start to decompose in exothermic reactions, leading to self-heating behavior. When the self-heating of the battery cell exceeds the rate at which heat can be dissipated to the surroundings, the cell temperature rises exponentially, the battery structure can rupture, and all remaining thermal and electrochemical energy is released to the surroundings.

Defining the Cell Configuration

Define the configuration of the cells within the battery module.

Configure the cylindrical battery cells using a staggered configuration with uniform spacing.

To define the cell configuration:

Create a battery module:

Right-click the Batteries > Battery Modules node and select New > TBM Battery Module.
Select the Batteries > Battery Modules > Battery Module > Module Configuration node.
In the Module Configuration - Properties window to the right of Battery Cells, click (Custom Editor).
In the Module Configuration - Battery Cells dialog, select Cylindrical Cell.
Click OK.

Once you specify the battery cell to use for module configuration, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ adds sub-nodes to the Module Configuration manager. These sub-nodes allow you to complete the setup.

Select the Module Configuration > Battery Module Configuration node.
In the Battery Module Configuration - Properties window, set Option to Staggered.

By default, the cell orientation is set to Flip Every Other, with the even cells flipped. Set the Series Connection Flip Option:

Select the Module Configuration > Module Connection Values > Series Connection Flip Option node.
In the Series Connection Flip Option - Properties window, make sure that Option is set to Flip Starting With Second Cell.

To set the number of cells in the module and the spacing between cells:

Select the Module Configuration > Module Layout > Module Staggered Positioning node.
In the Module Staggered Positioning - Properties window, set Gap Between Cells to 0.004 m.
Select the Module Configuration > Module Layout > Module Staggered Size node and set Number of Cells in Staggered Row to 3.
