Plot Solution Variables Property Reference

X Type Properties

Type

Specifies what data will be used for this axis. Typically, one axis will be Scalar and the other Direction or Scalar. Although Direction is permitted on both axes, it makes no real sense to do this.

Direction

The axis data corresponds to point/cell position vectors dotted with the normalized direction vector specified in the Vector Quantity sub-node.

Scalar

The axis data corresponds to a scalar field function at the point/cell defined in the Scalar Function sub-node.

X-Axis

Selects the x-axis for the plot. The choice of axes depends on the total number of axes in the plot.

Y Type Properties

Y-Axis

Selects the axis on which the data for this Y-type is plotted. The choice of axes depends on the total number of axes in the plot.

Smooth Values

Defines where the data is evaluated on the associated part.

Activated

Interpolates the variables to the vertices of the parts.

Deactivated

Evaluates the variables at the cells of the parts.

Data Focus

Selects a data focus object to apply to this Y-type. The choice of data focus objects depends on the total number of these objects in the simulation. When a data focus object is selected, a data focus sub-node is added to this node. See Exploring Solutions with Data Focus.

New

Creates a new Y Type node.

Scalar Function Node Properties

Field Function

The specific scalar field function to be plotted as the data value for this axis.

To assign a scalar field function using drag-and-drop:

  1. Open the plot in which you want to assign a field function.
  2. Expand the Automation > Field Functions node.
  3. Drag the field function node of your choice onto one of the axes, around which a highlight box appears as you hover over it with the mouse pointer.

In the simplest situation of one axis type (typically a Y-Type) being associated with that axis, the field function is assigned immediately. If the axis type already has a field function assigned, that field function is replaced by the one you are assigning.

  4. In a more complex plot, select the destination from a context menu that reflects the configuration of the plot:
    • For multiple axis types, choose one of the existing axis types or all of them.
    • For a plot with assigned and unassigned axis types (that is, with or without a field function already selected), choose from among assigned and unassigned, all assigned, all unassigned, or all axis types, depending on what the plot contains.
    • If you drag multiple field functions at once, the context menu begins by letting you choose which of them to assign.
NoteThis technique is only available with scalar field functions.

Units

Defines the units that are applied to the selected function.

Vector Quantity Node Properties

Value

A Cartesian vector that specifies the orientation (in the space of the simulation) of the coordinate axis.
