Defining Boundary Conditions and Body Load

Specify the fluid velocity at the inlet, and constrain the pipe extremities in all degrees of freedom. Also, apply a body load on the pipe to reach an initial deformed configuration.

For the fluid, you can specify boundary conditions under the relevant region boundary nodes. For the solid pipe, the parts-based approach of the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ FE framework requires you to set constraints on part surfaces using segments.

To specify the fluid velocity at the inlet:

  1. Expand the Regions node.
  2. Select the Fluid > Boundaries > Inlet > Physics Values > Velocity Magnitude node and set Value to 0.001 m/s.
To constrain the pipe:
  1. Right-click the Pipe node and select Create Segment > Surface Segment.
  2. Rename the Pipe > Segments > Surface Segment 1 to Fixed Ends, and set the following properties:
    Property Setting
    Surfaces left end
    right end
    Type Constraint
The default constraining method is Fixed and is appropriate for this case, as it prevents the pipe extremities from moving in any directions.
To apply a static body load on the pipe:
  1. Select the Pipe > Physics Conditions > Body Load Option node and set Method to Specified.
  2. Select the Physics Values > Body Load node and set Value to [0,-1.55E7,0]N/m^3.
  3. Save the simulation.
