    - Prerequisites
      The instructions in the Fluid Structure Interaction - Vibrating Pipe tutorial assume that you are already familiar with certain techniques in Simcenter STAR-CCM+.
    - Loading the Initial Simulation
      Load the starting simulation for this tutorial. The starting simulation file includes predefined geometry parts that represent the pipe and fluid geometry. Each part is assigned to a region, and part surfaces are assigned to region boundaries as appropriate. The boundary types and symmetry conditions are fully defined.
    - Selecting the Physics Models
      The starting simulation file also includes predefined physics continua, Fluid Physics and Solid Physics, that are assigned to the fluid and the solid region, respectively. For each continuum, activate appropriate physics models to specify the fluid and the pipe behavior, including coupling at the fluid-solid interface.
    - Creating the Fluid-Structure Interface
      In fluid-structure interaction problems, the fluid and solid regions exchange field data across a shared interface. As the FE solid stress framework is completely based on parts, you create a fluid-structure interface from the contact between the fluid and solid parts.
    - Specifying Material Properties
      Define the equation of state of the compressible fluid by specifying the fluid density in terms of pressure and speed of sound. Also, specify the pipe material.
    - Generating the Mesh
      You are provided with predefined parts-based mesh operations, which are fully set up and ready for execution. These operations use the Directed Mesher to generate a hexahedral cell mesh for the fluid domain, and a mesh of linear hexahedral elements (hex8) for the solid domain.

      Select the appropriate motion models to simulate the deformation of the fluid and solid regions under the external load on the pipe. For the solid region, define a Solid Displacement motion, that allows the pipe mesh to deform in real time based on the computed displacements. For the fluid region, define a Morphing motion, that allows the fluid mesh to deform based on the displacements mapped at the interface.
    - Defining Boundary Conditions and Body Load
      Specify the fluid velocity at the inlet, and constrain the pipe extremities in all degrees of freedom. Also, apply a body load on the pipe to reach an initial deformed configuration.

      Prepare plots and scenes to monitor the pipe displacement during the solution progress.

      Run a static analysis to compute the static equilibrium solution.

    In Simcenter STAR-CCM+, you can analyse the two-way coupled fluid-structure interaction of systems whose motion paths are described by multiple superposed motions.

    In fluid-structure interaction simulations, you can define the motion of a solid structure relative to the motion of a 6-DOF body. A typical application is the analysis of the mechanical stresses on propellers attached to marine vessels.

    Simcenter STAR-CCM+ provides the capability of performing a two-way coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulation with opening and closing flow paths, which are due to the deformation of a hyperelastic non-linear material such as rubber. This capability can aid in the design of (but is not limited to) seals, valves, and gaskets used within a range of industries.

Generating the Mesh

You are provided with predefined parts-based mesh operations, which are fully set up and ready for execution. These operations use the Directed Mesher to generate a hexahedral cell mesh for the fluid domain, and a mesh of linear hexahedral elements (hex8) for the solid domain.

Expand the Geometry > Operations node.

Execute the predefined mesh operations sequentially:

Right-click the Operations node and select Execute All.
The Fluid Mesh operation runs first, and sweeps the surface mesh that is defined on the outlet through the fluid volume, generating the fluid hexahedral mesh. The Pipe Mesh operation then sweeps the surface mesh available on the contacting fluid through the pipe volume, up to the pipe outer wall, generating the pipe hexahedral mesh. As the Pipe Mesh operation uses the existing fluid mesh, it is important that you execute the operations sequentially, without changing the order of the operations in the pipeline.
Visualize the volume mesh with a method of your choice, for example creating a mesh scene.
