Specifying the Material Indicator Initial and Boundary Conditions
The simulation starts with the entire topology optimization domain being filled with fluid. This initial condition provides the highest flexibility for the topology optimization solver in determining the optimal flowpath. For the topology optimization domain only, you specify material indicator values at the boundaries.
The topology optimization domain consists of wall boundaries that define the domain and the obstacle, and two internal interfaces that connect the domain with the inlet and outlet channels. Symmetry boundaries are applied on the side of each region in order to imply an indefinite extent in the Z direction (pseudo-2D approach). By default, on wall boundaries and contact interfaces, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ specifies a material indicator value of 0 meaning that the solid material can grow from this surface. For the interfaces between the topology optimization domain and non-topology optimization domains, the solver by default permits fluid material with the material indicator value of 1. Further, on wall boundaries adjacent to these interfaces, you set the Topology Option as Free to allow the material indicator to be extrapolated from the near wall cell.
To specify initial values for the material indicator:- Select the Value is set to 1. node and make sure that A material indicator value of 1 means that the domain is initially filled with fluid material, that is, the material of the physics continuum.
- To ensure a smooth interface between the topology optimization domain and non-topology optimization domains, select the node and set Topology Option to .
- Save the simulation.
